RÍO GRANDE CENTRE

The city of Río Grande is located in the northeast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, 211 kilometres from Ushuaia via National Route 3 and 83 kilometres from the San Sebastián border crossing. It can be reached by land from Río Gallegos -which is 365 km away-, requiring passage through four customs checkpoints, declaring equipment and people entering and leaving the country, as the Strait of Magellan is crossed by ferry through Chilean territory. Entering by land is usually time-consuming. The city can also be reached via the Gobernador Ramón Trejo Noel International Airport, which has daily and regular flights to and from Buenos Aires, and a weekly flight to Río Gallegos. The climate is cold, humid, and very windy. The cultural and architectural heritage demonstrates great historical and cultural richness thanks to its inhabitants who emigrated from different parts of the country and the world. The city maintains low-density architecture, a setting of a rural past combined with modern architecture of large shops and wide avenues. The local economy is based on industrial, commercial, oil, and livestock activities. Río Grande is recognized as the “International Capital of Trout,” appreciated by sport fishing enthusiasts due to the high quality and number of trout inhabiting its river. At the same time, as the “National Capital of the Vigil for the Glorious Deed of the Malvinas,” it is visited by national and international tourists in March and April during the acts and commemorations of the Deed. The city hosts many monuments and sites related to the 1982 South Atlantic Conflict. Río Grande has a variety of hotels of different categories, bars, pubs, craft breweries, and restaurants. It has a racetrack and kart track where important regional and national motor tourism events are held.
