PUENTE VIEJO

Near Cerro del Águila, specifically at kilometre 2820 of National Route No. 3, lies the historic hanging bridge. It was built from 1918 till 1920. On August 4th, 2011, due to a severe storm combined with the neglect and lack of foresight by the authorities, the centennial hanging bridge, an icon of the history of the city of Río Grande, finally collapsed into the river. The structure had been hanging by temporary repairs after some of its cables gave way, accumulating numerous ice floes carried by the current in recent days.
