Cabo Peñas is a geographical feature located 15 km southeast of the city of Río Grande, standing 30 metres high. The Selknam called this cape “Amiskn,” meaning “the fallen blocks at the foot of the cape,” and the Haush called it “Oijei,” meaning “fishing place.” Its name was assigned by the brothers Bartolomé and Gonzalo Nodal on January 20th, 1620. They were explorer navigators and named it in reference to Cape Peñas located in Asturias, Spain, where they were from. The rocks we can observe are fragments from the same cape, sedimented and eroded, measuring between 5 and 10 metres, and shaped by the action of the wind and the sea. Near the cape on the cliffs, there is a lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1916. It is 13 metres high, and access is free via stairs.
