Salesian Mission

The Salesian Mission of Our Lady of Candelaria is an educational, cultural, and historical housing founded by the religious congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The site was declared a National Historic Monument in 1983. It was the headquarters of the Salesian Missions that arrived from Italy to Río Grande and were responsible for the evangelization of the Selk’nam people. In 1946, this rural establishment became an Agricultural Technical School, which still operates today. The buildings that make up the Historic Monument are the old Chapel (1897), the House of the Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, the House of the Salesians, and the Indigenous Graveyard. The site also houses the Monseñor José Fagnano Historical and Natural Sciences Museum, which exhibits a science collection with a variety of taxidermied specimens of Fuegian flora and fauna, as well as objects belonging to the indigenous Fuegian peoples, such as arrowheads and various utensils and tools. The lands of Cabo Domingo belong to this institution. It is located ten minutes from the city centre.
